Biography/Research
Dr. Denise Huang is a CRESST senior researcher whose recent work includes evaluations of after school programs, investigations of the effect of motivation, attribution, and effort towards academic achievement, and the effect of parental influences on student learning. Dr. Huang leads a research team conducting multiple evaluations of a district wide after school program called LA’s BEST. She also is the validation coordinator for the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning that is identifying and validating promising and exemplary practices at 21st Century Community Learning Centers programs nationwide. Dr. Huang’s other projects include a study of 168 of the LA's BEST after school sites, using a value-added model to study the effects of program participation on students’ academic achievements. Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, she is conducting a study of the long-term effects of LA’s BEST on student criminal behaviors and citizenship. Other studies include an analysis of benchmarks for quality after school programs, funded by the California Policy Research Center, and an evaluation of the impact of a healthy living program on the LA’s BEST student participants, funded by Kraft foods.
