« Adult Learning Research-Based Distance Learning to Support Navy Workplace Education To support delivery of distance learning (DL) for Naval civilian personnel, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded CRESST to transform the guidelines developed in the ONR project "Knowledge, Models and Tools to Improve the Effectiveness of Naval Distance Learning" for use in evaluating Web-based courseware, and to develop a testbed for conducting distance learning research, including the evaluation of Web-based courseware and two studies on the effect of feedback in online learning tasks. In addition, a subcontractor, the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education (RSOE), developed and tested a distance-learning course providing training in learning strategies. A second subcontractor, the University of California at Santa Barbara Department of Psychology, conducted research on interactions of verbal and visual presentation with verbal and visual learning styles. The CRESST distance learning testbed is described in CRESST Technical Report 695. The University of California at Santa Barbara research is described in Mayer, R.E. & Massa, L. J. (2003). Three facets of visual and verbal learners: Cognitive ability, cognitive style, and learning preference. Journal of Educational Psychology, 95(4), 833-846.
