« Adult Learning Integrated Learning Environment Assessment System To support delivery of the training management and delivery of online content envisioned for the Navy’s Integrated Learning Environment (ILE), the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has funded CRESST to design and prototype an ILE Assessment System (ILEAS). The ILEAS will provide learner performance data needed to deliver the right training to the Sailor at the right time, and with increased efficiency, which will reduce or avoid individual accounts (IA) costs by reducing total time to train while maintaining a level of performance equivalent to or better than current performance in target skills. ILEAS will achieve this goal by applying assessment technology to enable more effective pre-assessment filtering and end-of-course assessments, more efficient instructional sequencing based on embedded within-course diagnostic assessments, and delivery of assessment results through online performance reports. CRESST and its subcontractor, the University of Southern California Center for Cognitive Technology (CCT), have developed and are testing the prototype by applying it to a module of Great Lakes Naval Training Station (GLAKES) Quartermaster A School (QM A) Maneuvering Board courseware, the True Wind topic of the Navigation Weather unit. Assessments are based on simulations developed with CCT’s iRides authoring system. We are investigating impact on training time with fixed performance levels using modeling techniques such as Bayesian nets. Domain models will be developed and knowledge/content dependencies will be identified. Model predictions based on the dependencies will not be used to make instructional decisions in the prototype implementation, but will be compared to observed performance to evaluate model performance. Results will be used to adjust model parameters and predict training time savings.
