Adult Learning

CRESST is well known for its research and development improving K-12 education, but we have also worked for many years on research and development improving adult learning. Applications range from assessments and tools for predicting marksmanship performance using cognitive and affective measures, to assessments of problem-solving performance in systems specification and air defense situations, to development and evaluation of research-based guidelines for “What Works in Distance Learning,” to the design, development, and validation of software Shareable Content Objects (SCOs), implementing assessments that can be delivered in a distance learning environment. One major focus of our work in adult learning is the use of technology to enable authentic measures of student learning and performance not possible without the use of the technology. Technologies used include simulations and microsensors embedded in tools used to perform the target tasks. A second focus is to use information technology to fuse or combine several different measures to support real-time identification and diagnosis of learner problems and prescription and delivery of remedial instruction through focused, just-in-time instructional “parcels.”
